Practical Information

Travelling to Hamburg

Hamburg is easily reached by plane, train, and car. Hamburg Airport offers connections to most European airports and also numerous intercontinental connections. See also the final conference bulletin for more travel details.

Public transport in Hamburg

Hamburg has a large and well-organised public transport system consisting of buses, underground trains and local trains ("S-Bahn"). See the HVV pages for timetables, lines, fares, etc. Most lines pass by Hamburg Central Station and Altona Station, the two large "Deutsche Bahn" (DB) train stations which connect to many German and European destinations. More details, especially on how to reach DESY, can be found in the final conference bulletin and on the web pages of the DESY guest services (see in particular here).

Accomodation during the conference

In general, we recommend the use of the typical hotel search portals such as Booking.com, Expedia or HRS when you are looking for accommodation during the workshop. These portals often offer the best prices. There are, however, a few hotels in the vicinity of DESY that you may want to contact directly:

A more complete list is available here.
Also useful might be this map showing selected hotels and the bus connections to DESY which was created using data from the OpenStreetMap-Project (OSM).

In addition, we have reserved a number of rooms in the DESY hostel, mainly for the convenience of younger workshop participants with limited funding. Reservation to these rooms is exclusively through the DESY guest services web portal; please use the keyword "DIS2016".

Visa questions

Participants who require a visa for attending the conference and wish to receive an official invitation should send an email to dis2016-lo@desy.de providing the following information:

      * Date and place of birth
      * Address of your institute and fax number
      * Head of your institute
      * Passport number
      * Prospective title of your presentation
      * Dates of arrival in Germany and departure

We strongly encourage participants to take the necessary steps soon, in order to allow time for the necessary administrative procedures.

Hamburg weather

Hamburg, being located in the northern part of Germany on the river Elbe, about 100 km from both the North and the Baltic Sea, has rather maritime climate. Predominantly westerly winds make for rather mild winters and cool summers. Throughout all of the year, Hamburg offers rain and wind, so you clearly do well by packing a raincoat and an umbrella. Typical average April temperatures are between 5 and 15 degrees, with up to 5 hours of sun. See e.g. Hamburg's Wikipedia entry for more details on the climate.

Hamburg tourism

The best overview over the touristic offers of Hamburg can be found on the official Hamburg Tourism web pages. More and local information on Hamburg and on the surroundings of DESY will be made available during the on-site registration at DESY.
